Everything you would like to know about process technology but you have never had the courage to ask

WHAT ARE THE SPECIALIST ACTIVITIES OF A PROCESS TECHNOLOGICAL EXPERT

WHEN DEVELOPING A PROJECT FOR A

NEW INDUSTRIAL WATER TREATMENT PLANT?

As is known, the design, construction and start-up of a new industrial water treatment plant is divided into different phases, respectively: Preliminary Engineering, Basic, Detailed Engineering, Project Design, Executive Engineering, Construction, Final Engineering, Documentation Project, Start Up and Testing / Validation.

For all the aforementioned phases of the Project, the role of the Specialist in charge, as Technological Supervisor, is the direction and Coordination of all the Engineering Departments in charge (Mechanical – Electro - instrumentation - Construction - Software/Logic - Chemicals - Etc.), to whom to provide all the detailed information for the correct realization of the product.

1st Phase of the activity of a Process Technologist is to collect all the Information and Technical Specifications of the Customer (Collection Data and Input Data) for an accurate collection of all the necessary technical data, for a correct choice of Technology and of the most suitable Process to be applied to the Specific Case Study.

2nd Phase consists in the elaboration of the identified best technical solution and process and in the development of the systems to be applied, implementing all the possible information of the related know-how held.

3rd Phase consists in Sizing the System. Particular attention is paid to the Performance and Guarantees required.

4th Phase foresees that all Regeneration Parameters and relative dimensioned Sequence Card are prepared, if it’s IX Resin System; or Management/Cleaning phases are determined, in the case of a UF/RO Membrane System.

5th Phase sees the Process Technologist prepare all information to calculate the diagrams of the various plant sections: Flow Diagram and their paths - PFD (Process Flow Diagram) - Plan of Sized and Classified Piping including Instruments List etc. - P&ID.

6th Phase foresees that Technologist elaborates Rejection Calculation Flows by type, volume and periodicity, indicating their destination and danger - Regeneration Eluates Characterization. It also provides technological support for estimating the consumption of the entire system, including: Water – Chemicals - Compressed Air - Electric, etc.

7th Phase requires Technologist to provide Specialist Assistance for the remaining activities of the executive project, respectively: technological support for the development of the Control Narrative; technological approval for the purchase of highly critical components, or for which the customer does not have the specifications; technical documentation check, with technological and Process Approval for the official issue to the final client; attendance at the detailed meetings in both the Design Review and Executive Phases, as well as attendance at the FAT for technological control of the equipment performed; Start Up for verification and achievement of contractual performance and presence at the site during the applied and Contractual Validation Protocol Procedures.

In addition, the Process Technologist is available to organize and support Training, more or less advanced, for the Operating/Conducting Personnel and Plant Supervisors.
